The Guéranger Blog

Welcome to the Gueranger Blog! You have stumbled across the notebook I use to record my thoughts as I read through Dom Prosper Gueranger's 15-volume set, The Liturgical Year. I do not have any special expertise in liturgy, but I have some general knowledge of Catholic theology and an enthusiasm for Gueranger's magnum opus. Think of it as the Liturgical Year fan site!

A note about our translator

Canisius | 13 January, 2006 21:44

There is an interesting description of Dom Laurance Shepherd, translator of the English edition of The Liturgical year, in Johnson, p. 419:

'Dom Laurence Shepherd, a monk of the English Benedictine Congregation, was a close friend of Gueranger. He was a frequent visitor to Solesmes and a regular correspondent with the Abbot. After Shepherd's death which occurred exactly ten years to the very day after that of Gueranger, Dom Couturier, wrote to the nuns of Stanbrook a letter of sympathy on the loss of their chaplain and remarked that he remembered Dom Shepherd, "coming to learn from the experience of an old man, seated close to him, listening to him with respect and writing down every word which came from the Father Abbot's lips and heart, young Laurance was like a son intently listening to the precepts of the Master."'

This is the kind of description you want of a translator: he knew the author personally, and was wholly devoted to his thought!
