The Guéranger Blog

Welcome to the Gueranger Blog! You have stumbled across the notebook I use to record my thoughts as I read through Dom Prosper Gueranger's 15-volume set, The Liturgical Year. I do not have any special expertise in liturgy, but I have some general knowledge of Catholic theology and an enthusiasm for Gueranger's magnum opus. Think of it as the Liturgical Year fan site!

Caveat emptor! Dangers of buying the French edition.

Canisius | 10 January, 2006 03:47

I was curious about whether Fr. Shepherd is translating the Latin hymns on his own from the Latin, or whether he is in fact translating into English Dom Gueranger's French translation of the Latin. So I went to the library and got out a French copy of the Christmas volume for comparison.

Imagine my surprise when the French edition didn't have the Latin text!

Only later did I find out that in 1948-1949 an abridged edition was published in French. If you look to buy a French edition, be sure you get the one published before 1948! (I believe the latest unabridged French edition is 1933.)

So does the version published before 1948 have the latin?

I can't say with demonstrative certainty, but I would be shocked if the unabridged French edition (i.e., anything before 1948) didn't have the Latin. I'll keep after this question, though, and let you know for sure.
