The Guéranger Blog

Welcome to the Gueranger Blog! You have stumbled across the notebook I use to record my thoughts as I read through Dom Prosper Gueranger's 15-volume set, The Liturgical Year. I do not have any special expertise in liturgy, but I have some general knowledge of Catholic theology and an enthusiasm for Gueranger's magnum opus. Think of it as the Liturgical Year fan site!

More on the Holy Innocents

Canisius | 04 January, 2006 04:55

The liturgies for the Feast of the Holy Innocents and the Octave of the Holy Innocents quote Matthew chapter 2, "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more."

That verse in Matthew is a quotation from Jeremiah 31:15. Given that Matthew applies this verse to the Holy Innocents, I am surprised that the liturgy nowhere alludes to the next verse in Jeremiah, namely 31:16: "Thus says the Lord: Let your voice cease from weeping, and your eyes from tears: for there is a reward for your work, says the Lord: and they shall return out of the land of the enemy."
