The Guéranger Blog

Welcome to the Gueranger Blog! You have stumbled across the notebook I use to record my thoughts as I read through Dom Prosper Gueranger's 15-volume set, The Liturgical Year. I do not have any special expertise in liturgy, but I have some general knowledge of Catholic theology and an enthusiasm for Gueranger's magnum opus. Think of it as the Liturgical Year fan site!

Solesmes and the Sacred Heart

Canisius | 15 June, 2007 12:23

Dom Fromage does not mention the fact, but the feast of the Sacred Heart is a significant one for Dom Gueranger and Solesmes. When the project at Solesmes was nothing more than plans and hopes, he prayed a novena for the success of his efforts:

"In the first days of this novena," recounts Dom Gueranger, "I was praying in the chapel of the Visitation. I was called interiorly to consecrate the work of reestablishing the Benedictines in France to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to which I had consecrated myself in the chapel of this same monastry on Maundy Thursday in 1823. I vowed to ask the bishop to allow me to have in Solesmes a benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in honor of the Sacred Heart on the first Friday of every month once we were established, and to erect an altar to the Sacred Heart in the church of our monastry, if three years after our installation we could continue the work."
