The Guéranger Blog

Welcome to the Gueranger Blog! You have stumbled across the notebook I use to record my thoughts as I read through Dom Prosper Gueranger's 15-volume set, The Liturgical Year. I do not have any special expertise in liturgy, but I have some general knowledge of Catholic theology and an enthusiasm for Gueranger's magnum opus. Think of it as the Liturgical Year fan site!

Ubi caritas--"Where is love?"

Canisius | 19 April, 2006 00:49

The heart-rending Ubi caritas, traditionally sung on Holy Thursday, has one line that reads ex corde diligamus nos sincero. This is a great example of where a little knowledge of Latin subtlties can be important: the first-year Latin student might take nos at face value and translate it, "Let us love ourselves sincerely from the heart."

Ouch. So much for a beautiful song about Christian love.

But a more seasoned student of Latin will recall that nos can have a reciprocal meaning, and will properly render it, "Let us love one another sincerely from the heart."
