The Guéranger Blog

Welcome to the Gueranger Blog! You have stumbled across the notebook I use to record my thoughts as I read through Dom Prosper Gueranger's 15-volume set, The Liturgical Year. I do not have any special expertise in liturgy, but I have some general knowledge of Catholic theology and an enthusiasm for Gueranger's magnum opus. Think of it as the Liturgical Year fan site!

The seasonal return of the Gueranger blog

At last, the liturgical year begins anew. This brings us back to that part of The Liturgical Year actually composed by Dom Prosper Gueranger, and in particular to the Advent volume, arguably the finest volume in the set. And so begins the seasonal renewal of the Gueranger Blog. I plan to...

Back, and almost in action

OK, so that delay was longer than expected. I am back at last and reunited with my beloved Liturgical Year set. Blogging will resume promptly! Meanwhile, I am happy to have found a description of this other work by Dom Gueranger. Now that I know what it is, anyone who knows me is welcome...

Blog days off

I have to take a trip over the next few days, so the blog will be quiet during that time. If this is your first time on the blog, pop something in the search box and have fun poking around!

Blogging on the road....

I am about to head out on a trip, so I will be on the road for three days. During that time, I will use the latest StealPhone technology: the blue chip device in my laptop taps into the cell phone signals of the cars around me and, by distributing its internet activities over several phones at...

Blog delay

Sorry I haven't blogged in a couple of days. I mislaid my Gueranger volume, but now I have found it. The Corpus Christi entry is huge .

A New Category of Posts

If you look to the right side of your screen and down a little, you may notice that I have added a new member to my list of categories: "Family Use". I have often posted a prayer or a new translation of a hymn on this blog with the thought that it would be handy for my family to have...

How to find old posts on a specific Gueranger reading.

I hope someday that this blog will serve as a partial sort of commentary on Gueranger's The Liturgical Year . In other words, I would like it if folks out there reading Gueranger could look up any comments I have made on the reading they are looking at, even if they are not looking at what...

Blog bog

Life is crazy at the moment. We're moving, and everything is disorganized. My blogging has suffered, and will continue to be spotty for quite some time. Sorry!

The motive emerges

Remember when I had that problem with spam comments, eventually eliminated by the CAPUCHIN (or whatever) security feature? The messages would appear in old posts that I wasn't looking at anymore, and they never said anything obscene or offensive in any way. So what were they up to? The...

Just try and spam me!

The computer brain that runs this site became aware of my plight and installed a new CAPUCHIN filter (or something like that), meant to distinguish between the good-willed and the malevolent. Lucky for us in the battle between good and evil, the bad guys are incapable of looking at a little...

Security question

Some kind of spider is adding hundreds of nonsense comments to my earlier posts. The point of adding them seems to be to create links to a page of advertisements. My blog software doesn't have that nice feature whereby a commentor must duplicate a graphically depicted string of numbers and...

New Category

Note that I have created a new category over at the right hand side of your screen. If you click on "Dom Gueranger", up should come all the posts concerning historical background for Dom Gueranger, Dom Laurance Shepherd, and their work. That way you can get an overview of any historical-type...

A system for reference to The Liturgical Year

From now on, I'm going to adopt a system to simplify references to The Liturgical Year . Unless otherwise stated, all references are to the English translation by Dom Laurence Shepherd, published in 1949 and republished in 2000. The volume number will be given in roman numberals followed by a...

OK, back to work!

I have been on vacation for a week, so the blog has been inactive. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to go back and "catch up" by blogging on all the material I missed. Reading it was all I could manage! So I'll pick up with the most recent readings, and proceed.

Oops--my own Blog Bobble!

Someone posted a nice comment on my entry titled, "Gueranger's Bible Bobble." Being a novice blogger, I accidentally (and permanently) deleted the comment! Ack! My apologies to the commentor. Future comments will be treated with the utmost caution.

Slow blogging of late--but I have an excuse!

I didn't blog as much as I wanted to for the feast of the Purification / Presentation. Our local parish is having a four-week "Basics of the Faith" class that I am supposed to teach. This is a trial for me--I don't know enough to be a teacher! Anyway, last night was the first one. It was...

Buying Gueranger's work

I've been thinking about adding a section of links or perhaps a new category of posts about where Gueranger can be purchased. In other words, if more Gueranger fans start reading this blog, they may appreciate information about where to get their own set. Meanwhile, I did some searching....
